About Islamorada, Florida

Living in Islamorada, Florida

Islamorada includes the islands of Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key and Lower Matecumbe Key and the offshore islands of Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key.

Spanish explorers gave the island its name translated to mean “Purple Isles.” However, the aqua blue water surrounding the islands is what attracts most, with fantastic views from every bridge, waterfront restaurant, and oceanfront resort.

Known as the “Sportfishing Capital of the World,” Islamorada is said to be home to the largest fishing fleet per square mile in the world. Backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly fishing were pioneered here by legendary fishing figures such as Ted Williams, Jimmy Albright and Cecil Keith and made famous by authors Ernest Hemingway and Zane Grey.

Highly skilled fishing guides offer daily charters to pursue bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and redfish in the flats and backcountry of the Florida Bay and offshore deepsea fishing in the Atlantic Ocean attracts anglers hoping to catch Mahi Mahi, sailfish, tuna and wahoo.

Islamorada Local Attractions

In addition to fishing, Islamorada offers activities including scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing, wind surfing, and kayaking.

Founders Park located on Plantation Key features 40 acres offering an Olympic-sized swimming pool, shallow beach, soccer and baseball fields, tennis, dog park and is also the setting for music festivals, the annual Nautical Flea Market, and Island Fest.

Islamorada boutiques and galleries attract locals and tourists for their beach chic clothing, handmade jewelry and fine art. The Morada Way Arts and Cultural Distinct, located on the island of Upper Matecumbe Key, hosts a Third Thursday Art Walk each month offering a plethora of activities for both art lovers and foodies.
