Marathon

Marathon, known as the heart of the Florida Keys, is a 10 mile long chain of islands including Knight’s Key, Boot Key, Key Vaca, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, Crawl Key and Grassy Key all located in the middle of the Florida Keys.

Marathon is one of the Florida Keys most marine-friendly cities with nearly 1,200 wet slips, 1,200 dry slips and major facilities to accommodate transient cruisers.

The Seven Mile Bridge which connects Knights Key in Marathon to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys is a famous bridge in the Florida Keys that was considered one of the longest bridges when it was first built. The old seven mile bridge constructed by Henry Flager as part of the Florida East Coast Railway’s Overseas Railroad is still erect in places and pedestrians and cyclists can travel on it to tour Pigeon Key.

Marathon is also home to the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport which offers two full-service FBO’s, fuel maintenance, tie-down, pilot and passenger facilities for general aviation enthusiasts and corporate jet operators.


Marathon Local Attractions


Residents and tourists enjoy Marathon’s fishing heritage and Marathon continues to be a major sport fishing destination. The beautiful reefs surrounding Marathon’s shores also make it a popular scuba diving, snorkeling, and spearfishing destination.

Marathon is also home to the Turtle Hopsital, one of only a handful of facilities in the United States with the ability to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured sea turtles. The Marathon Wild Bird Center and the Crane Point Museum is also located in Marathon and is one of the last untouched tropical hardwood hammocks.

Marathon derives much of its livelihood from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico and fresh caught seafood is a staple at most restaurants.
